Eligibility
Requirements for Lung Cancer Screening CT Scanning
Certain requirements must be met to participate in the lung cancer screening CT scan at Ingalls. A smoker must meet one or more requirements from each of the following three groups:
Group 1
• Must be over 50 years of age, OR
• An active smoker over 40 years of age with a 20 pack-year
experience. A pack year equals the number of packs smoked
per day times the total number of years smoked:
- 1 pack per day x 20 years = 20 pack years
- 2 packs per day x 10 years = 20 pack years
- 3 packs per day x 7 years = 21 pack years
Group 2
• Has NOT already been diagnosed with lung cancer (unless it
has been treated for cure and there is no known recurrence)
Group 3
• Is an active smoker, OR
• Has at least a 10-pack year experience, OR
• Has had a strong exposure to second-hand smoke, OR
• Has had a strong occupational experience to asbestos,
beryllium, uranium or radon, OR
• Has quit smoking within the last 10 years, OR
• Has a significant family (parents/siblings) history such as
- Lung Cancer
- Emphysema
• OR has had a previous non-small cell lung cancer that has
been treated for cure and there is no known recurrence.
